Basketball Training Set to Begin

The much awaited basketball season is officially here! Starting this week, January 18th our Grade 10 - 12 student-athletes will hit the court to bring training with our Grade 8 and 9 student-athletes starting next week, January 25th. We are extremely thankful for the support the school Administration has showcased, ensuring our students have the opportunity to brush the dust of and get back being physically active. Also critical to making this season of training a reality is the commitment of our coaching staff, who regardless of the pandemic have graciously volunteered their time to EMS Athletics.

It is important to note that the style of program we are offering at this time will be considerably different than in the past, we will be focusing on individual development, particularly individual skills such as ball handling and shooting, with stringent restrictions on scrimmages of any type. We hope to provide a valuable experience for student-athletes to train with their peers and build lasting, positive relationships within our school community.

We are once again requiring each participant to complete paperwork in order to participate, no exceptions! Updated documents are required even if completed for the Fall Season, all documents can be found on our "Documents Tab".

All participants and caregivers should take a moment to review the Earl Marriott - Return to Play Guidelines (link below) as these guidelines will be strictly adhered to throughout all training sessions. Our guidelines have been adapted since the Fall Season and have once again placed the safety of our student-athletes and coaches at the forefront in reducing the risk of COVID transmission in our facilities and training sessions. Should you have any questions regarding the guidelines, please do not hesitate to contact the Athletic Director, Mr. Clift clift_t@surreyschools.ca.

Future Thunderbirds - Recent Signings

Earl Marriott is proud to announce that 3 of our graduating student-athletes will be heading to UBC next year to join the Thunderbirds...

Hanna Sobkowich is looking forward to being a member of the Track and Field team where she will take her blazing speed to the track to run sprints. Hanna has been a multi-sport athlete all her life, while at EMS she played volleyball and soccer, while running track each year. She also plays elite level softball in the community. We look forward to seeing her future successes on the track!

Mia Bullock is ready to take her game to the next level and will be attending UBC as a member of the Women's Rugby program. Mia is a multi-sport athlete who has participated in volleyball and track while at EMS as well as playing rugby each year. She is a tenacious player who is excited about getting on the field at UBC and taking her game to the next level. Good Luck Mia!

Sadie Gluvic will be joining Mia with the Women's Rugby program at UBC. Sadie has been a huge contributor with our Girls Rugby program at EMS, playing each year and being an excellent role model to our younger athletes. Sadie is also involved with rugby in the community and is very deserving of the opportunity to continue her career at the University level. All the best in the future Sadie!

EMS Cross Country & the Pandemic Challenge

The Earl Marriott XC Team, led by Ms. Ginther participated in a Province wide challenge created by BC School Sports in an effort to engage students to get outside, physically active and virtually competing against other student-athletes from around the Province. The goal was to promote school-sport and the ability of sport to bring people together through competition, even if it was virtually and different then a traditional competition. The event had close to 2000 participants from 91 schools. Earl Marriott was proud to have 19 student-athletes compete, we were one off the Walnut Grove for the most participants in an A-Category school.

We are particularly proud of our Top 20 Finishers, they include:

Girls 3.0km Junior - Mia in 17th place;
Boys 5.5km Junior - Hudson in 4th place;
Girls 3.0km Senior - Julia in 11th place;
Girls 5.5km Senior - Kylie in 15th place and Grace in 17th place;
Boys 3.0km Senior - Colton in 14th place.

The XC team was very fortunate to the opportunity to train and compete this season. Many thanks go out to BC School Sports for their leadership in this initiative, Ms. Ginther for sharing this opportunity with our school community and the parents who supported their children in getting them to training and competition at Crescent Park. We are already looking forward to the Track Season in the Spring... hope to see you there!

BCSS RETURN TO SCHOOL SPORT PLAN - VERSION 3.0

BCSS released an updated version of their Return to School Sport Plan, a copy along with highlighted amendments can be found below. At this time we are not moving into a new Stage, however ongoing dialogue is continuing between BCSS, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. Many changes are housekeeping in nature to align with common language used in the Health and Education guideline.
Return to School Sport Plan - Version 3.0 - October 23, 2020

FALL AND WINTER SEASON OF PLAY UPDATES - OCTOBER 21, 2020

The BCSS Board of Directors met and decided to extend the Fall Season of play to December 18th 2020. At the same time they have cancelled all Fall Season Regional and Provincial Championships, inevitable given we are still in Stage 2.. While the cancellation of Championships is disappointing, the lengthening of the season keeps the door open for potential localized competition. Consequently, the Winter Season of play will be delayed to start on January 4th 2021, again with the goal of having our fall student-athletes the opportunity to have inter-school competition.

If you have any questions or concerns about how this may impact your Athletics experience at Earl Marriott please do not hesitate to reach out
to the Athletic Director, Mr. Clift (clift_t@surreyschools.ca).  A copy of the Memorandum can be found below.

Fall Season Update (October 1st) - EMS Return to School Sport Details

BC School Sports has recently announced updates to their BCSS Return to School Sport Plan and with this promising information Earl Marriott is going to proceed with the first steps in our Fall Season programming to include Cross Country, Football and Volleyball. It is important to note that sport will look a little different then our traditional season start up, however our goal is to get student-athletes engaged, active and participating.

At this time we are only able to provide training/practice sessions, however as we get a better grasp of the interest in our various programs, we will look to transition to tryouts, team formation when appropriate and team training with the hope of being able to participate in inter school competition. There is no concrete timeline for this process, however we will be prepared for each stage and share the information as it comes available.

Parents, student-athletes and coaches must be aware of the Earl Marriott Return to School Sport plan. It is strongly encouraged that everyone reviews the BCSS Guidelines (Version 2.0) to further understand the current landscape of School Sport. As alway please contact Taylor Clift, Athletic Director at EMS (clift_t@surreyschools.ca) with any questions or concerns.

BC School Sports - Return to School Sports Plan

On September 2nd BCSS released a document supporting the over 450 member schools around the province as a guide to the reintegration of school sport activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the start up to the 2020 Fall Season. While school and school-wide athletics is going to look different this year, the Athletic Department is committed to providing opportunities for our student-athletes regardless of the landscape of School Sport. We value the importance of physical activity and the role of school sport on the health and well-being of our students. Together, in collaboration with the school district, EMS administration and our coaches, we look to provide activities that place the safety of our student-athletes at the forefront while engaging them within their chosen extra-curricular activities.

Girls Soccer Program Host Oakhill College
The Earl Marriott Girl's Soccer Program had the opportunity to host a touring squad from Oakhill College on April 16th. While the squad from Oakhill was missing some of their players due to injury, they put up a strong fight against our Mariners. The team from EMS, girls in grade 10 - 12, definitely won the battle on this day, however the experience for both teams is something they will all remember. A solid example of how sport provides amazing opportunities, not only on the field of play, but in life!

The AAA girls started their season with a big win, 99-0 over Charles Best! The team with 9 girls still on a high from their success in New Zealand over spring break along with some new members of the squad, played the high tempo game they are known for. Defensive line speed and superior skill sets created havoc for the opposition. The team make up is once again the youngest in the AAA competition in the valley. There were multiple players who scored multiple try’s. The team was led by Rachel Smith who led the way with her high work rate. Darah Karavat in just her second season and first as a starter was named player of the game with 4 try’s to her credit. Callie Foreman had great day off the tee with a kicking percentage in the 90’s. Finally Mia Bullock had a great game directing the attack from first five and was impressive with 3 trys of her own.
